Downwind foiling opens up a new way to experience the ocean — fast, fluid, and built for covering long distances offshore. It’s about reading the wind, linking endless bumps, and exploring open water in its purest form. This is the kit Brady Hurley relies on to maximize speed, stability, and adaptability in any downwind run.
Board:7’6", 100L, 17” wide, hand shaped by Sean Ordonez at SOS Shapes. This board is my daily driver because of how smooth and quick the release is for paddling up onto foil, but also still giving me a surfy feel once I'm up and riding.
Credit: Tiloi Alapa Front Wing:Lift 110 High Aspect X. My go to wing for downwind foiling, whether its open ocean channel crossings, or coastal downwind runs. I feel like I can maximize my speed and efficiency with this wing in a variety of conditions.
Rear Wing:Lift 21 Florence X. This rear wing gives me enough low end speed if the bumps get minimal, while still holding a fast enough top end speed when the bumps get huge.
Mast:30” Florence M6 Mast. An everyday mast that’s always ready to go. The M6 carbon makes it ultra stiff and quick through straight speed lines and carving, the 30” length can handle any conditions while still being long enough to give it a surfy feel.
Paddle:Black Project Foil X Paddle - Size Small. The paddle is key for downwind sup foiling. If you fall, you want to be able to paddle up onto foil in any conditions. This specific paddle has plenty of range to where I feel comfortable with any paddling cadence, from flat water to overhead open ocean swells.
Outfit:Long Sleeve Utility Pocket Hooded Rashguard, Cordura Airtex Boardshort . The hooded rash guard keeps me cool and protected from the sun. It also has a pretty solid range of high visibility, which come can in clutch out in the ocean. There’s plenty of variables out there and we should be ready for anything. I’m a big fan of anything Cordura. Have never gotten a rash from wearing these (surfing, running, cross training, paddling, foiling). They’re durable to handle any conditions, but still have plenty breathability and stretch for comfort.
Water Backpack:It’s always nice to have some hydration on hand while down winding. The backpack also serves as a nice holder for safety equipment - I always carry my radio, phone, and tourniquet on the front straps.
